Gospel Literacy Program
Gospel Literacy is a resource for all members who want to participate in home-centered, church-supported gospel learning. It is available Church-wide in English and is being piloted in the Africa West Area in French.
Gospel Literacy is part of Come, Follow Me. The Gospel Literacy Basics curriculum provides additional support to members who need to strengthen reading skills, basic gospel knowledge, and participation in gospel living and service.
The classes teach gospel topics together with reading, writing, teaching and organizing skills. The focus is to help members live the words of God at progressively higher levels on the covenant path to eternal life.
There are three foundational-level books and three intermediate-level books. This enables members (at any reading ability) to teach, learn, and live the gospel in their homes.
Curriculum
The gospel literacy books are progressive, beginning with the ABC book. Learners may enter the gospel literacy program with the book best suited for their learning. Find books below .
Implementation
The Gospel literacy program is taught in wards and branches and is available to all units in the Africa West Area. It may be taught every Sunday during the second hour of church meetings ( Area Presidency Letter to Leaders ) or at other times or on other days to best meet the needs of learners. The book(s) taught are selected by the ward/branch council based on the needs of members.
Gospel literacy teachers are called by the bishopric or branch presidency. They are supported by the ward/branch council, especially the Sunday School, and are frequently called as Sunday School teachers.
They receive training, support and mentoring from stake and district gospel literacy specialists who are called by stake/district presidencies and supported by the stake/district council.
Stake/district gospel literacy specialists receive training, support and mentoring from coordinating council gospel literacy trainers called by Area Seventies (with approval from the Area Presidency), who are trained, supported and mentored by the Area gospel literacy coordinator and training coordinator.
